‘Into a new morning’ is a photo to the gallery ‘Lost cities‘.
I made this photo early in the morning in the old city of the city of Nijmegen, The Netherlands.
This old part of the city is called ‘Benedenstad’ (Down Town), it is literally 5 to 10 meters below the adjacent city center. Winding streets with buildings of sometimes hundreds of years old, take you to the past. During the Second World War, large parts of this district were destroyed in a bombing. During the rebuilding, much attention has been paid to architecture that fits the ancient facades. As often with these types of projects, the opinions are divided on how successful that has been done.
Fortunately, there are not only shadows of the past to see and feel. As I walk through these streets, I feel the bustling activity that has taken place for centuries and still exists. Sparkling of life, sparkling of light. I feel that even early in the morning, and I want to express that in this series of photos.
